NSB Kings Bay History
Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia was established in 1978 and is the Atlantic Fleet's home for ballistic missile submarines. It is homeport to the Ohio-class SSBNs that carry the Trident II D5 submarine-launched ballistic missile, a critical leg of the nation's nuclear triad. Kings Bay will eventually support the Columbia-class SSBN as it replaces the aging Ohio-class boats. The base is one of the most strategically important installations in the U.S. military.

1978
Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay Authorized
Congress authorized construction of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Camden County, Georgia, as the Atlantic Fleet's dedicated facility for fleet ballistic missile submarines. Kings Bay was selected to provide an East Coast counterpart to Bangor's West Coast Trident operations and reduce transit times for Atlantic patrol areas.
1979
Major Construction Begins
Major construction commenced at Kings Bay to build the piers, waterfront facilities, drydocks, and support infrastructure required to homeport nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarines. The project was one of the largest military construction undertakings in the southeastern United States.
1989
First Trident II D-5 Submarine Arrives
USS Tennessee (SSBN-734) arrived at Kings Bay as the first submarine armed with the Trident II D-5 missile — a generational upgrade in accuracy, range, and payload over the earlier Trident I C-4. Kings Bay became the primary Atlantic Fleet base for the D-5 and the backbone of the U.S. sea-based nuclear deterrent.
2002
Strategic Weapons Facility Atlantic Consolidated at Kings Bay
Strategic Weapons Facility Atlantic (SWFLANT) fully consolidated its Trident II missile maintenance, processing, and logistics support at Kings Bay, making the installation the single Atlantic Fleet hub for all nuclear submarine weapons systems maintenance and secure storage.

Where To Live
St. Marys
Small Town
St. Marys is the charming small coastal city adjacent to NSB Kings Bay and the most popular community for submarine force families stationed there. It has a beautiful historic waterfront district, a ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore, and a genuinely pleasant quality of life for a small Georgia city. The military population is substantial but well-integrated into the community.

Cumberland Island National Seashore ferry departs from St. Marys — wild horses and pristine beaches 45 min by boat. St. Marys waterfront restaurants are excellent. Crooked River State Park nearby for camping and kayaking. One of the more genuinely beautiful small cities near a submarine base.
Kingsland
Suburban
Kingsland sits just north of St. Marys and offers a more commercial suburban environment with slightly lower housing prices and all the major retail chains that St. Marys lacks. It's the practical choice for families who want Walmart, Chili's, and chain retail within walking distance while maintaining a quick commute to Kings Bay. Growing steadily as the area develops.

Dual military
Same excellent Camden County school system as St. Marys. Better retail and restaurant options than St. Marys. Quick access to I-95 for Jacksonville trips (45 min) and Savannah (1 hr). Growing community with new development.
