Naval Air Station New Orleans Established

Naval Air Station New Orleans was established in 1940 on the southern shore of Lake Pontchartrain, providing the Navy with a Gulf Coast aviation hub ahead of U.S. entry into WWII. It trained thousands of naval aviators during the war.

Redesignated Joint Reserve Base

Following post-Cold War force reductions, NAS New Orleans was redesignated a Joint Reserve Base in 1993, transitioning from an active-duty to a reserve-focused mission hosting Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Army Reserve components.

Hurricane Katrina Causes Catastrophic Damage
