The Naval Construction Battalion Center was established at Gulfport, Mississippi, in 1942 as the primary training and mobilization base for the Navy's Construction Battalions — the famous "Seabees." The center trained tens of thousands of Seabees who built airfields, harbors, and fortifications across the Pacific.

Hurricane Katrina Devastates the Installation
Hurricane Katrina struck NCBC Gulfport on August 29, 2005, with catastrophic force, destroying much of the base infrastructure. Seabee units from Gulfport were among the first military forces to respond and begin reconstruction of civilian infrastructure across the Gulf Coast.
