NRSW San Clemente Island History
San Clemente Island, located about 68 miles off the coast of Southern California, is a Navy-owned island used for live-fire training, bombing practice, and special warfare exercises. It is one of the few locations where the military can conduct ship-to-shore bombardment, live-fire amphibious training, and underwater demolition training in a controlled environment. The island has no permanent civilian population and is managed by Navy Region Southwest.

San Clemente Island is a remote naval training range located approximately 68 miles off the coast of San Diego, administered under Navy Region Southwest and Naval Base Coronado. Access is strictly controlled and limited to personnel with authorized orders.
Personnel assigned to the island coordinate all in-processing through Naval Base Coronado. Contact your gaining unit’s administrative officer well in advance for reporting instructions, island-specific requirements, and information on housing availability on the range.

Visitors must be sponsored by someone with base access and should contact the installation's Visitor Control Center in advance with their government-issued ID and vehicle info. Day passes are issued at the gate; extended access may require additional coordination.

What is BAH and how is it calculated?
BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) is a monthly stipend based on your pay grade, dependency status, and the duty station ZIP code — it is not counted as taxable income. Rates are updated each January; use the BAH Calculator in the Finance section to see current figures for NRSW San Clemente Island.
