NAS Fallon History
Naval Air Station Fallon in the Nevada desert is the Navy's premier tactical air warfare training facility. Established in 1942, it is home to the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center, which includes the famous TOPGUN fighter weapons school (relocated from Miramar in 1996). Carrier air wings complete their pre-deployment training at Fallon, making it the final proving ground before carrier deployments. The surrounding ranges provide the most realistic integrated strike warfare training available to naval aviation.

1942
Naval Auxiliary Air Station Fallon Established
Naval Auxiliary Air Station Fallon was established in 1942 near Fallon, Nevada, as a training and support airfield in the Nevada desert. Its remote location and vast restricted airspace made it valuable for gunnery and bombing training.
1972
Naval Fighter Weapons School Begins Using Fallon
The Naval Fighter Weapons School — commonly known as "Top Gun" — began conducting air combat maneuvering exercises at Fallon's ranges in the early 1970s after its establishment at NAS Miramar. Fallon's airspace allowed for the large-scale strike exercises that Miramar could not support.
1996
Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center Relocates to Fallon
The Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC), which consolidated Top Gun and other naval aviation schools, relocated from NAS Miramar to NAS Fallon in 1996. Fallon became the Navy's sole center for advanced tactical aviation training, and remains the home of the Navy's Top Gun program.

NAS Fallon is a remote installation about 60 miles east of Reno, Nevada in the Carson Valley area. The Fallon area is small — on-base amenities and community cohesion are especially important for quality of life.
The Fallon, Nevada area is known for excellent outdoor recreation including fishing at Lahontan Reservoir, hunting, and off-roading. Reno (about 60 miles west) provides access to a larger metro area. The Navy community here is tight-knit given the remote location and elite training mission.

Where To Live
NAS Fallon is the Navy's sole tactical air warfare training center, located in Churchill County, Nevada — one of the most remote major naval installations in the US. Fallon is a small agricultural and mining community in the Lahontan Valley. Reno is 60 miles west on US-50, providing the nearest city amenities. The surrounding desert and mountain terrain offer extraordinary outdoor recreation.
Fallon
Small Town
Churchill County's seat is the only significant community near NAS Fallon. The city has a Walmart, grocery stores, and basic services for a small Nevada town. Churchill County Schools serve the community. Nevada has no state income tax, which is a meaningful financial benefit even in this remote posting. The Lahontan Valley wetlands, Fallon National Wildlife Refuge, and the access to the Walker River drainage for fishing and camping make the outdoor lifestyle rich.
