Where To Live

Naval Station Newport and Naval War College are located on Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island — one of America's most historically and scenically distinguished small states. Newport's gilded-age mansions, sailing culture, and New England charm make it a unique assignment. Rhode Island is compact, giving families access to Providence, Boston, and Cape Cod from the same address.

Middletown

Suburban

The community immediately north of Newport on Aquidneck Island, Middletown is the most practical choice for NS Newport families — Middletown Public Schools are better-regarded than Newport City, housing is somewhat more affordable, and Easton's Beach and Second Beach provide exceptional Atlantic Ocean beach access. The commute to base is minimal. Middletown's suburban character contrasts pleasantly with Newport's tourist intensity.

Newport

Urban

Newport proper is one of America's most beautiful and historically rich small cities. The Naval War College is embedded in the city, and living in Newport itself places families within walking distance of the mansions, the Cliff Walk, Thames Street dining, and Newport Harbor sailing. Newport Public Schools have challenges, leading many families with children to Middletown. For singles and couples without school-age kids, living in Newport is incomparable.

Portsmouth

Small Town

The northernmost community on Aquidneck Island, Portsmouth offers more land, quieter neighborhoods, Portsmouth Public Schools, and farms and orchards that feel worlds away from Newport's bustle. The commute to NS Newport runs 15–20 minutes south through Middletown. Families who want a rural-edge New England lifestyle with access to everything Aquidneck Island offers often choose Portsmouth.
