NB Kitsap History
Naval Base Kitsap in Washington State was formed by consolidating the former Naval Station Bremerton and Naval Submarine Base Bangor. Bremerton has served as a major Navy shipyard and homeport since 1891, while Bangor is home to a significant portion of the nation's nuclear ballistic missile submarine fleet (Ohio-class SSBNs). Together they form the Navy's largest installation in the Pacific Northwest, supporting surface ships, submarines, and the strategic nuclear deterrent.

Navy Establishes Puget Sound Naval Station
The U.S. Navy established a naval station at Bremerton on Puget Sound in 1891, creating a strategic Pacific Coast base with deep-water access, sheltered anchorage, and excellent proximity to Pacific shipping lanes. The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, built alongside the station, grew into one of the Navy's most capable ship repair facilities.
1941
WWII Shipyard Expansion
The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard expanded dramatically during World War II, becoming one of the Navy's most critical ship repair and battle damage overhaul facilities. The shipyard repaired and overhauled dozens of warships damaged in Pacific combat operations, returning vessels to the fight.
1977
Naval Submarine Base Bangor Established
Naval Submarine Base Bangor was established on Hood Canal to homeport the Pacific Fleet's Trident nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarines. SUBASE Bangor became the West Coast home for Ohio-class submarines, providing a critical and survivable element of the nation's nuclear deterrent triad.
2004
Naval Base Kitsap Established
Naval Base Kitsap was established on October 1, 2004, by merging Naval Station Bremerton and Submarine Base Bangor under a single installation commander. The consolidation created the Navy's third-largest installation by area, combining surface ship and submarine homeporting under one command.

In-Processing
Naval Base Kitsap operates across two main installations, and your initial check-in location depends on your gaining command. Personnel assigned to commands on the Bremerton side should report to Building 443 at 120 South Dewey Street for check-in with the Personnel Support Detachment (PSD). Those assigned to tenant commands at Bangor should report to the Duty Office in Building 1100, near the Bangor Main Gate ((360) 627-4024; after hours: (360) 340-5335). Hand-carry your military orders, service record, medical and dental records for all family members, marriage certificate if applicable, and children's school records.
In-processing at Naval Base Kitsap typically takes two to three business days and involves sequential check-ins with PSD, finance, housing, medical/dental, and your assigned command. The Fleet and Family Support Center offers Newcomer Briefs and Welcome Aboard classes to help you and your family acclimate to the installation and surrounding Kitsap Peninsula community. Register for classes and individual relocation consultations through the Regional Scheduling Office at 1-866-854-0638. The FFSC also loans hospitality kits — containing kitchen items, small appliances, and household supplies — to families whose household goods are still in transit.
The FFSC should be your first stop after arriving at Naval Base Kitsap. The Bremerton office ((360) 627-2412) and Bangor BLUE office ((360) 396-4115, Building 2901, 2901 Barbel Street, Silverdale, WA 98315) provide relocation assistance, financial counseling, employment support, Exceptional Family Member Program coordination, and deployment readiness. A School Liaison Officer is available at (360) 340-2824 (Bremerton) or (360) 396-4860 (Bangor) to assist families with school enrollment and transitions. For 24/7 support, contact Military OneSource at 1-800-342-9647.

Where To Live
Silverdale
Suburban
Silverdale is the commercial hub of the Kitsap Peninsula and the most popular destination for Naval Base Kitsap families. It has excellent retail, good schools, a growing restaurant scene, and a suburban character that works well for families across all pay grades. The Puget Sound views are a constant backdrop, and outdoor recreation is exceptional throughout the peninsula. It's one of the Navy's more desirable homeports from a quality-of-life perspective.

Kitsap Peninsula offers world-class hiking, kayaking, and boating on Puget Sound. Olympic National Park is 90 minutes away. Seattle via ferry from Bremerton is just over an hour. One of the most naturally beautiful military postings in the country.
Bremerton
Small Town
Bremerton is the largest city on the Kitsap Peninsula and has been undergoing a significant downtown revival. It's more affordable than Silverdale, has a ferry terminal connecting to Seattle, and has a gritty-authentic Pacific Northwest waterfront character. The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard is located here, and families comfortable with an urban feel will find Bremerton more dynamic than the suburban alternatives.
