Established as Tarrant Field; B-24 Training
The installation opened in 1942 as Tarrant Field, a WWII Army Air Forces base that trained B-24 Liberator crews. It was redesignated Carswell Air Force Base in 1948 in honor of Major Horace Carswell Jr., a Fort Worth native awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for WWII heroism.

B-36 Peacemaker Wing; Nuclear Deterrence Mission
Carswell hosted a Strategic Air Command B-36 Peacemaker wing in the 1950s, making it one of the nation's primary nuclear deterrence bases during the early Cold War. The B-36, the largest piston-engine bomber ever built, flew intercontinental nuclear strike missions from Carswell.

Transferred to Navy; Redesignated NAS JRB Fort Worth
Following the 1991 BRAC decision, Carswell AFB was transferred to the Navy in 1994 and redesignated Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth. The installation hosts Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, and Army Reserve units.

NAS JRB Fort Worth is a joint reserve base hosting Navy Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, and Air Force Reserve aviation units. The command administrative office initiates check-in and coordinates in-processing appointments. The FFSC at (817) 782-7600 coordinates newcomer orientation.
In-processing procedures vary by branch and component given the joint reserve mission. Confirm branch-specific requirements with your gaining command before arrival. The installation hosts the Navy Reserve's VP-30, Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 401 (VMFAT-401), and AF Reserve's 301st Fighter Wing. Full-time active-duty and AGR/TAR personnel follow expedited in-processing procedures.
