Fort Bragg History

Named AfterPrivate First Class Roland L. Bragg

Fort Bragg, located near Fayetteville, North Carolina, is renowned as the Home of the Airborne and Special Operations. The installation was established on September 4, 1918, as Camp Bragg, primarily serving as a field artillery training center during World War I. It achieved permanent status as Fort Bragg in 1922. Throughout World War II, the base played a critical role, housing all five airborne divisions, including the 82nd Airborne Division, which became a permanent tenant in 1946. The 1952 addition of the Psychological Warfare Center further solidified its special operations legacy. In 2023, the base was briefly renamed Fort Liberty under federal legislation. However, in 2025, it was rededicated as Fort Bragg to honor World War II hero Pfc. Roland L. Bragg. Pfc. Bragg earned the Silver Star for capturing a German ambulance to rescue wounded comrades during the Battle of the Bulge. Today, the installation remains a premier power projection platform and one of the largest military complexes in the world.

Where To Live

Fort Bragg — now officially Fort Liberty — anchors the Fayetteville metro in Cumberland County, North Carolina. The surrounding communities range from the suburban sprawl of Fayetteville proper to small towns like Spring Lake, Hope Mills, and Raeford. Military families make up a large share of the local population, and BAH rates reflect the demand for housing in this busy installation area.

Hope Mills

Suburban

Hope Mills is a well-established suburban community just south of Fayetteville that draws a large share of Fort Liberty families. It offers a quieter, more residential feel than Fayetteville proper, with lower crime rates, decent schools, and a range of housing options from affordable starter homes to newer builds. A practical choice for families who want space without a long commute.

Commute: 15–20 min

Gate: Reilly Gate

Schools: Cumberland County Schools

Families with kids

Budget-friendly

Pet owners

Small-town feel with solid community events, multiple parks, and less congestion than central Fayetteville. Good mix of price points makes it popular across ranks.

Spring Lake

Small Town

Spring Lake sits directly adjacent to Fort Liberty's Murchison Gate and is arguably the most convenient off-post community for soldiers who want to minimize commute time. It's a working-class military town — not fancy, but functional — with quick gate access, plenty of budget-friendly rentals, and a commercial strip that covers the basics. Popular with junior enlisted and families who prioritize proximity above all else.

Commute: 5–10 min

Gate: Murchison Gate

Schools: Cumberland County Schools

Single service members

Budget-friendly

Dual military

Extremely short gate access is the main draw. Housing prices are some of the lowest in the Fayetteville area. Being right on the bubble of the base makes for a tight-knit military community.

The information on this page is compiled through a combination of sources. We reference official U.S. Department of Defense publications, branch directives, and installation command websites on a regular cadence to ensure accuracy across policy, regulation, and operational data. Where relevant, we supplement that foundation with credible auxiliary resources, including verified government agencies, military support organizations, and established partners with direct ties to the installation community.

Our editorial team includes past and present military personnel who review and contribute firsthand knowledge — ensuring what you read reflects the real experience of military life, not just what's written in a regulation.
