Fort McPherson History
Named AfterMajor General James Birdseye McPherson
Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia, was established in 1885 and served as the headquarters of U.S. Army Forces Command and Third Army at various points in its history. The installation was closed in 2011 under BRAC 2005, and the property has been transferred to the City of Atlanta and a local development authority for redevelopment into a mixed-use community. Its closure ended over 125 years of continuous Army presence in the heart of Atlanta.
