Camp Stewart Established as Antiaircraft Training Center

Camp Stewart was established near Hinesville, Georgia, as a major antiaircraft artillery training center during the WWII buildup. Named after Brig. Gen. Daniel Stewart, a hero of the Revolutionary War and War of 1812, the camp trained battalions that served in every theater of operations.

1944

Expanded Training Mission During WWII

Camp Stewart expanded to train dozens of antiaircraft artillery battalions through 1944, processing tens of thousands of soldiers in specialized artillery skills needed to defend Allied forces and installations from enemy air attack in North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific.

1950

Reactivated for Korean War Training

Following post-WWII demobilization, Camp Stewart was reactivated to support the Korean War effort, training soldiers for rapid deployment to the Korean Peninsula and providing continental air defense training during the early Cold War period.

1974

3rd Infantry Division Assigned to Fort Stewart

The 3rd Infantry Division ("Rock of the Marne") relocated to Fort Stewart from Germany, establishing the division–installation partnership that continues today. The "Marne Division" became the post's primary combat unit and the Army's rapid deployment force for the southeastern United States.

Where To Live

Fort Stewart is the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi, occupying over 280,000 acres in Liberty County, Georgia. Hinesville is the primary civilian community adjacent to the post. Families seeking more urban amenities often look toward Richmond Hill (Bryan County) or Savannah, with commutes of 25–45 minutes. The coastal Georgia climate is warm and humid, with stunning natural scenery.

Hinesville

Small Town

Hinesville is the city that exists primarily to support Fort Stewart and is the most convenient option for soldiers stationed there. It's dense with military families, supporting services, and affordable housing. Liberty County schools are middle-of-the-road, but proximity to post and low cost of living make it the default choice for most junior and mid-grade soldiers.

Dual military

Close-knit military community with strong unit and FRG connections. Fort Stewart's size means most soldiers and families live, shop, and socialize in Hinesville. Not a glamorous posting, but the community bonds are strong.

Richmond Hill

Suburban

Richmond Hill sits in Bryan County about 30 minutes north of Fort Stewart and offers a noticeably higher quality of life for families willing to make the commute. Bryan County schools are highly rated, the community is newer and more suburban, and it's close enough to Savannah to enjoy one of the South's most beautiful cities on weekends.

Outdoorsy types

Proximity to Savannah's historic district and River Street is a major draw. Bryan County schools are among the best in the region. Suburban tranquility, strong schools, and Savannah access make this the top pick for career soldiers at Stewart.
