Named AfterBrigadier General Daniel Stewart
Fort Stewart near Hinesville, Georgia, was established in 1940 and is the largest military installation east of the Mississippi River by acreage. It is home to the 3rd Infantry Division, one of the Army's most frequently deployed divisions. The installation's vast training areas support combined arms maneuver, live-fire exercises, and deployment staging. Hunter Army Airfield in nearby Savannah operates as a sub-installation and provides strategic deployment capabilities through its proximity to the port of Savannah.

Camp Stewart Established as Antiaircraft Training Center
Camp Stewart was established near Hinesville, Georgia, as a major antiaircraft artillery training center during the WWII buildup. Named after Brig. Gen. Daniel Stewart, a hero of the Revolutionary War and War of 1812, the camp trained battalions that served in every theater of operations.

Expanded Training Mission During WWII
Camp Stewart expanded to train dozens of antiaircraft artillery battalions through 1944, processing tens of thousands of soldiers in specialized artillery skills needed to defend Allied forces and installations from enemy air attack in North Africa, Europe, and the Pacific.
1950
Reactivated for Korean War Training
Following post-WWII demobilization, Camp Stewart was reactivated to support the Korean War effort, training soldiers for rapid deployment to the Korean Peninsula and providing continental air defense training during the early Cold War period.
1974
3rd Infantry Division Assigned to Fort Stewart
The 3rd Infantry Division ("Rock of the Marne") relocated to Fort Stewart from Germany, establishing the division–installation partnership that continues today. The "Marne Division" became the post's primary combat unit and the Army's rapid deployment force for the southeastern United States.
2003
"Thunder Run" Into Baghdad
The 3rd Infantry Division led the assault into Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom, conducting the famous "Thunder Run" on April 5 and 7, 2003 — armored columns that seized the Iraqi capital and effectively toppled the Saddam Hussein regime in one of the most decisive armored operations in modern history.

In-Processing
All Soldiers report to the Marne Reception Center (MRC) at Building 486, Pony Soldier Avenue, which operates 24/7. This includes personnel assigned to Hunter Army Airfield — all initial in-processing is at Fort Stewart. After passing through the Main Gate, turn right on Bultman Avenue, then left on Pony Soldier Avenue. Parking is in the rear.
Sign in no later than 2359 on the day your leave ends or your report date, whichever is earlier. Wear duty uniform when reporting 0600–1700 Monday–Friday; civilian attire is acceptable after hours. Everyone must present in person at 0615 daily for accountability.
In-processing is a five-day process. Bring signed leave form, orders with amendments, CAC, medical/dental records, and financial paperwork. MRC offers airport pickup from Savannah-Hilton Head International at standard shuttle times (1100–1300, 1800–1900, 2300–0100) — notify Staff Duty in advance. ACS Relocation Readiness at Building 87, 191 Lindquist Road ((571) 801-6953) provides lending closet and relocation counseling.
