Detroit Arsenal History
The Detroit Arsenal in Warren, Michigan, was established in 1940 as the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant, where Chrysler mass-produced M3 and M4 Sherman tanks during World War II. After the war the manufacturing operation transitioned to a research and engineering mission. Today it is home to the U.S. Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center (formerly TARDEC), the Army's primary facility for research and development of ground combat and tactical vehicles. The arsenal drives innovation in areas including autonomous vehicles, hybrid-electric propulsion, and survivability technology.
