Fort Devens History
Named AfterMajor General Charles Devens
Fort Devens in north-central Massachusetts was established in 1917 as a major mobilization and training camp for both World Wars. It was closed under BRAC in 1996 and partially converted to a mixed-use community called Devens. A Reserve enclave, Fort Devens Reserve Forces Training Area, continues to operate on part of the former installation, supporting Army Reserve and National Guard training. Much of the former base has been developed into a commercial, residential, and recreational area.
