The Army's presence in Hawaii dates to the late 19th century and today is managed by U.S. Army Pacific, headquartered at Fort Shafter. Army installations on Oahu include Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Army Airfield, and various support facilities. Schofield Barracks Established
Schofield Barracks was established in 1908 to provide mobile defense of Pearl Harbor and Oahu, named for Lieutenant General John Schofield who recommended a Pearl Harbor naval base after visiting Hawaii in 1872. It is the largest Army installation in Hawaii.

25th Infantry Division Activated; Pearl Harbor Attacked
The 25th Infantry Division ("Tropic Lightning") was activated at Schofield Barracks on October 1, 1941, and was at the center of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor two months later. The division subsequently deployed to Guadalcanal.
1994
U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii Established
U.S. Army Support Command Hawaii was redesignated U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii (USAG Hawaii) on January 6, 1994, creating the unified garrison command that manages Army installations across the Hawaiian Islands.

Visitors must be sponsored by someone with base access and should contact the installation's Visitor Control Center in advance with their government-issued ID and vehicle info. Day passes are issued at the gate; extended access may require additional coordination.

What is BAH and how is it calculated?
BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) is a monthly stipend based on your pay grade, dependency status, and the duty station ZIP code — it is not counted as taxable income. Rates are updated each January; use the BAH Calculator in the Finance section to see current figures for Hawaii – Army.
