Fort Campbell History
Named AfterBrigadier General William Bowen Campbell
Fort Campbell owes its existence to the massive mobilization efforts of World War II. Its story began in the summer of 1941, months before the United States officially entered the conflict.
The War Department sought a site capable of supporting an armored division, requiring vast acreage and specific terrain. On July 16, 1941, the location spanning Christian and Trigg counties in Kentucky, and Montgomery and Stewart counties in Tennessee, was officially selected. Construction moved at a breakneck pace; by early 1942, what was once farmland had been transformed into a military powerhouse.
The installation was named in honor of William Bowen Campbell, a Whig politician and the last Whig Governor of Tennessee. Campbell was a distinguished soldier who served as a Brigadier General in the Union Army during the Civil War and a colonel during the Mexican-American War, where he famously led his regiment with the cry, "Follow me!"

Where To Live
Fort Campbell straddles the Kentucky-Tennessee state line, giving families the unusual choice of living in two different states for their off-post community. Clarksville, Tennessee, is the largest and most popular city, while Oak Grove and Hopkinsville on the Kentucky side offer closer proximity to the main gates. Tennessee has no state income tax on earned wages, which influences many family decisions.
