Anniston Army Depot History
Anniston Army Depot was established in 1941 in northeastern Alabama as an ordnance storage and maintenance facility. During World War II and the Korean War it served as a major ammunition storage site. It later became the Army's premier facility for rebuilding combat vehicles, small arms, and artillery. Today ANAD is the only facility in the Department of Defense that overhauls and rebuilds tracked combat vehicles, including the M1 Abrams tank and the M113 family of vehicles. The depot employs a large civilian workforce and is vital to the Army's equipment readiness and modernization pipeline.
