Welcome to Fort Greely, Alaska, Home of the Rugged Professional! Fort Greely History
Named AfterMajor General Adolphus Washington Greely
Fort Greely near Delta Junction, Alaska, was established in 1942 as a cold-weather testing facility. During the Cold War it hosted nuclear-powered research projects and Arctic test programs. Today its primary mission is hosting the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system, a component of the U.S. ballistic missile defense shield with interceptor missiles designed to protect the homeland from limited ICBM attacks. Fort Greely's remote subarctic location makes it ideal for this strategic mission, and the Missile Defense Agency continues to invest in expanding its interceptor capacity.
