Camp Humphreys History

Named AfterMajor General Andrew Atkinson Humphreys

Camp Humphreys near Pyeongtaek, South Korea, was originally established in 1919 during the Japanese occupation and was taken over by U.S. forces after World War II. Named after Major General Andrew Atkinson Humphreys, it underwent a massive multi-billion-dollar expansion in the 2010s to become the largest U.S. military installation overseas. It now serves as the headquarters of United States Forces Korea, Eighth Army, and numerous other commands that relocated from bases closer to Seoul. Camp Humphreys is the centerpiece of the U.S. military presence on the Korean Peninsula and plays a critical role in the alliance's deterrence posture.

1919

Japanese Military Builds Pyeongtaek Airfield

The Imperial Japanese military constructed an airfield at Pyeongtaek that would become the physical foundation of what is today Camp Humphreys. This early infrastructure was the seed from which the entire garrison eventually grew, as the site's flat terrain and strategic location on the Korean peninsula made it valuable to successive military powers for over a century.

1952

K-6 Airfield Supports Korean War Operations

During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force repaired and upgraded the Pyeongtaek airfield, designating it K-6. It hosted U.S. Marine Corps Air Group 12 and the 6147th Tactical Control Group, making it an active combat-support hub that transformed the installation from a dormant Japanese-built field into a functioning U.S. military asset in the Republic of Korea.

1962

Post Renamed Camp Humphreys

The base was officially renamed Camp Humphreys in honor of Chief Warrant Officer Benjamin K. Humphreys, a pilot with the 6th Transportation Company who died in a helicopter accident in Korea. The renaming formalized the installation's identity as a permanent U.S. Army presence on the peninsula and marked a transition from a temporary wartime airfield to a named, standing garrison.

2004

U.S.–South Korea Expansion Agreement Signed

The United States and South Korean governments reached an agreement to consolidate all U.S. forces south of the Han River, with Camp Humphreys designated as the primary hub. The deal called for relocating U.S. Forces Korea, Combined Forces Command, and United Nations Command headquarters from Seoul's Yongsan Garrison to Pyeongtaek, with South Korea funding the lion's share of an approximately $10.8 billion expansion.

2018

USFK Headquarters Relocates from Seoul to Humphreys

On July 29, 2018, U.S. Forces Korea officially opened its new headquarters at Camp Humphreys, ending 44 years of operations at Yongsan Garrison in downtown Seoul. Combined Forces Command and United Nations Command subsequently completed their own moves, turning Camp Humphreys into the largest overseas U.S. military base in the world, covering 3,454 acres.
