Fort Barfoot History
Named AfterTechnical Sergeant Van Thomas Barfoot (Medal of Honor)
Fort Barfoot, formerly known as Fort Pickett, is a Virginia National Guard maneuver training center in Blackstone, Virginia. It was originally established in 1926 and expanded significantly during World War II as a major Army training installation. The post was renamed in 2023 in honor of Technical Sergeant Van T. Barfoot, a Medal of Honor recipient, as part of the Congressionally mandated renaming of installations that had commemorated Confederate officers. Today it serves primarily as a training center for Guard and Reserve forces.
