Tyndall AFB History
Named AfterFirst Lieutenant Frank Benjamin Tyndall
Tyndall Air Force Base near Panama City, Florida, was established in 1941 as a gunnery training base. It has served as the home of the Air Force's air dominance mission and hosted the 325th Fighter Wing. In 2018 Hurricane Michael devastated the base, destroying or damaging nearly every structure. A massive multi-billion-dollar rebuild is underway to create the "Base of the Future" — a model installation with modern, resilient infrastructure. Tyndall has been designated as a future home for the F-35A Lightning II and is being rebuilt with 21st-century force protection and energy resilience standards.

Tyndall became home to the Air Defense Weapons Center in the 1950s, serving as the Air Force's center for air-to-air weapons testing and air defense tactics development during the Cold War. The installation hosted the William Tell weapons meet, the Air Force's premier air-to-air combat competition.
