F.E. Warren AFB History

Named AfterMedal of Honor recipient and U.S. Senator Francis Emroy Warren (Corporal; Civil War)

F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, is one of the oldest continuously active military installations in the country, originally established as Fort D.A. Russell in 1867. It has served as a cavalry post, Army training camp, and missile base. Today it is home to the 90th Missile Wing, one of three wings operating the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. Warren is slated to be the first base to receive the new LGM-35A Sentinel ICBM as the Air Force replaces the aging Minuteman III system, making it the vanguard of the nation's nuclear deterrent modernization.

1867

Established as Fort D.A. Russell

Fort D.A. Russell was established in 1867 near Cheyenne, Wyoming, to protect workers building the transcontinental railroad — making it one of the oldest military installations that became an Air Force base. It was renamed in 1930 for Wyoming Senator Francis E. Warren.

1947

Transferred to Air Force

Following the establishment of the Air Force as a separate branch in 1947, the installation transferred from Army to Air Force control. It is one of the only Air Force bases with a history predating the Civil War era.

1958

First ICBM Wing in the Air Force

F.E. Warren became the Air Force's first ICBM installation in 1958, receiving Atlas missiles as the nation's nuclear deterrent transitioned from bombers to ballistic missiles. It now operates Minuteman III ICBMs covering a 12,600-square-mile missile field across Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska.

Where To Live

F.E. Warren AFB is located on the western edge of Cheyenne, Wyoming, one of the oldest continuously active military installations in the US. Cheyenne is Wyoming's capital and largest city. The high plains climate is windy and cold in winter, but summer brings the world-famous Cheyenne Frontier Days. Colorado's Fort Collins and Denver are accessible for city amenities.

Cheyenne (West Side)

Suburban

The neighborhoods on Cheyenne's west side, closest to Warren's main gate, are the natural choice for base families. Laramie County School District #1 serves the city with solid ratings for a Wyoming school system. Downtown Cheyenne has a growing restaurant and brewery scene, the Wyoming State Museum, and Frontier Park. Home prices are affordable, and Wyoming has no state income tax — a meaningful benefit for active-duty families.

Budget-friendly

No WY state income tax, very affordable housing, Frontier Days rodeo culture, Denver day trip, historic downtown

Cheyenne (South / Saddle Ridge)

Suburban

Newer developments on Cheyenne's south side, particularly the Saddle Ridge and Buffalo Ridge areas, attract families who want newer construction in established suburban neighborhoods. The same Laramie County SD #1 district serves this area, but newer schools in the south serve the growth corridors. The commute to Warren via Pershing or Dell Range runs 15 minutes.

Fort Collins, CO

Suburban

Many Warren families who prioritize schools and city amenities choose to live in Fort Collins, Colorado, about 45 minutes south on I-25. Fort Collins is consistently ranked one of the best cities in the US — home to Colorado State University, a legendary craft beer scene, excellent Poudre School District, and year-round outdoor recreation. The I-25 commute can be done daily, but requires tolerance for significant wind during winter months.
