The installation opened in 1941 as a primary pilot training base near Valdosta, Georgia, named for Major George P. Moody, a Valdosta native and pilot killed in a 1941 training crash. It became Moody Air Force Base in 1948.

Personnel arriving at Moody AFB report to their unit's Commander Support Staff during duty hours with their PCS package. The CSS schedules all required in-processing appointments. After-hours arrivals report to the on-base lodging office. The M&FRC at (229) 257-4657 coordinates the mandatory Newcomer's Orientation, which covers base services, Valdosta-area community resources, and an information fair with participating agencies.
All newly assigned permanent-party personnel attend the Right Start newcomer orientation. First-term airmen attend the First Term Enlisted Center (FTEC) as well. The A&FRC provides relocation assistance, school liaison, and spouse employment services throughout the in-processing period.
Moody AFB is home to the 23rd Wing (A-10C Thunderbolt II, HH-60W Jolly Green II) and the 347th Rescue Group.
