Arnold AFB History

Named AfterGeneral of the Air Force Henry H. "Hap" Arnold

Arnold Air Force Base near Tullahoma, Tennessee, is home to the Arnold Engineering Development Complex, the most advanced and largest complex of flight simulation test facilities in the world. Established in 1951, it was named after General of the Air Force Henry H. Arnold. The base operates dozens of wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, and space environment simulation chambers used to test virtually every U.S. military aircraft and many space systems before their first flights. Arnold AFB is managed by Air Force Materiel Command and operated primarily by a contractor workforce. It remains essential to testing next-generation hypersonic weapons, propulsion systems, and space technologies.
