Andersen AFB History
Named AfterBrigadier General James Roy Andersen
Andersen Air Force Base on the northern tip of Guam was established during World War II as a staging base for B-29 bomber operations against Japan. Named after Brigadier General James Roy Andersen, it served as a key launching point for Arc Light bombing missions during the Vietnam War. During the Cold War it maintained a strategic bomber presence in the Pacific. Today Andersen is a critical power projection hub for Pacific Air Forces, supporting bomber task force rotations, fighter deployments, and humanitarian response missions. It is undergoing significant expansion as part of the broader U.S. military buildup on Guam tied to the Indo-Pacific strategy and the relocation of Marines from Okinawa.
