Little Rock AFB History

Little Rock Air Force Base near Jacksonville, Arkansas, was established in 1955 as a Strategic Air Command missile and bomber base. Today it is home to the 19th Airlift Wing, the largest C-130 unit in the Air Force, and the 314th Airlift Wing, which conducts all Air Force C-130 formal flight training. The base is the center of gravity for C-130 Hercules operations across the force and continues to be essential as the Air Force sustains and modernizes its tactical airlift fleet.

Established as Little Rock Air Force Base

Little Rock AFB was established in 1955 as a Strategic Air Command installation during the Cold War buildup. The base initially hosted bomber and tanker units before transitioning to the ICBM mission with Titan II missiles in the 1960s.

1963

Titan II ICBM Mission Assigned

Little Rock AFB was assigned the Titan II intercontinental ballistic missile mission in 1963, operating 18 missile sites across central Arkansas until the Titans were deactivated in 1987. One of the sites is now preserved as the Titan Missile Museum.

1992

Becomes Primary C-130 Training Base

Following the end of the Titan II mission and post-Cold War restructuring, Little Rock AFB was designated the Air Force's primary C-130 training base in 1992. It now trains all Air Force, Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve, and many allied nation C-130 aircrews.

In-Processing

All inbound members complete a consolidated in-processing appointment at the Combat Airlift Welcome Center (Building 940) within 72 hours of arrival. The appointment covers Traffic Management, Military Personnel Station, Finance, and the Medical Group in a one-stop format. First-duty-station officers must also complete a mandatory Financial Briefing through the M&FRC. After-hours arrivals check in at the Razorback Inn lodging (Building 1024, 1024 Cannon Circle), staffed 24/7.

The Newcomers Orientation is mandatory and held twice monthly on Wednesdays from 0800–1600 (check-in at 0745) at the M&FRC in the Walters Community Support Center. Base leadership greets new members, community representatives attend, and all mandatory in-processing briefings are completed. Spouses attend a separate dedicated orientation track. If no sponsor contact has been made 30 days before departure, contact the INTRO office at (501) 987-8228.
