Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, North Carolina, was established in 1942 and named after a local Navy test pilot. Today it is home to the 4th Fighter Wing, which operates the F-15E Strike Eagle in the air-to-ground deep strike role, and the 916th Air Refueling Wing (AFRC), flying the KC-46 Pegasus. The base has a long history with strike aircraft and continues to play a key role in the Air Force's combat fighter and tanker missions.

The installation was established in 1942 and named for Navy Lieutenant Seymour A. Johnson, a Goldsboro native and naval aviator killed in a training accident in 1941. It trained WWII fighter and bomber crews before becoming a permanent Air Force installation.

B-52 Crash Near Goldsboro
On January 24, 1961, a B-52 broke apart in flight near Goldsboro, dropping two Mark 39 nuclear bombs. Both weapons were recovered, but the incident highlighted risks in nuclear weapons handling and contributed to changes in nuclear safety protocols.
1988
F-15E Strike Eagle Arrives
Seymour Johnson received the first operational F-15E Strike Eagle in 1988, becoming the first base to field the dual-role strike fighter. The 4th Fighter Wing and its F-15Es have deployed to every major U.S. air campaign since.
