Barksdale AFB History
Named AfterSecond Lieutenant Eugene Hoy Barksdale
Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana, was established in 1933 and is one of the oldest continuously operating air bases in the country. It served as a major bomber training base during World War II and later became a Strategic Air Command installation during the Cold War. Today Barksdale is home to the Eighth Air Force and Air Force Global Strike Command headquarters, making it the nerve center for the nation's bomber force. The base operates B-52H Stratofortress aircraft and is expected to receive B-21 Raider bombers as the Air Force transitions its long-range strike fleet.

1930
Barksdale Field Established in Louisiana
Barksdale Field was established near Bossier City, Louisiana, as part of the Army Air Corps expansion program. Named after Lt. Eugene Barksdale — a pioneering WWI aviator who died in a 1926 crash — the field became one of the South's major bomber training and operational bases.
1948
Strategic Air Command B-36 Bombers Assigned
Strategic Air Command B-36 Peacemaker intercontinental bombers were assigned to Barksdale, establishing the base as a frontline nuclear deterrent installation during the early Cold War. The massive six-engine B-36 required significant infrastructure improvements to the base.
1958
2nd Bomb Wing Converts to B-52 Stratofortress
The 2nd Bomb Wing at Barksdale converted from the B-36 to the jet-powered B-52 Stratofortress in 1958. The B-52 became Barksdale's signature aircraft through the Cold War and remains in service at the installation into the 21st century, a record of longevity unmatched in Air Force history.
1991
B-52s Launch Opening Salvo of Operation Desert Storm
On January 17, 1991, B-52G Stratofortresses from Barksdale's 2nd Bomb Wing launched the opening salvo of Operation Desert Storm, firing 35 AGM-86C conventionally armed cruise missiles at Iraqi targets. The 35-hour, 14,000-mile round-trip mission was the longest combat bombing mission in aviation history at that time.
2009
Air Force Global Strike Command Established at Barksdale
Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) was activated at Barksdale Air Force Base on August 7, 2009, assuming command of all Air Force nuclear-capable bombers (B-52 and B-2) and intercontinental ballistic missiles. Barksdale became the headquarters for America's airborne leg of the nuclear triad.

Where To Live
Barksdale AFB anchors the Bossier City-Shreveport metro in northwest Louisiana, home of the 2nd Bomb Wing. The base sits on the east bank of the Red River, directly adjacent to Bossier City. Families enjoy one of the lowest costs of living of any major Air Force installation, with Louisiana's warm climate and strong cultural character adding to quality of life.
Bossier City
Suburban
Bossier City sits directly across Red River from Barksdale and is the default community for Air Force families stationed there. It's a mid-size Louisiana city with a full range of amenities, good schools, and a dense military population. The Barksdale corridor along Airline Drive has grown substantially with new retail, restaurants, and housing. Bossier's proximity to the base makes it the practical and popular choice.
