Laughlin Air Force Base near Del Rio, Texas, was activated in 1942 as a World War II training field. Named after First Lieutenant Jack Laughlin, a local pilot killed in action, it has served as a pilot training base for most of its history. Today Laughlin is home to the 47th Flying Training Wing and is one of the highest-volume undergraduate pilot training bases in the Air Force. Its dry climate and uncongested airspace make it ideal for year-round flying training operations.

The installation was established in 1942 near Del Rio, Texas, as a WWII pilot training base. It was named for First Lieutenant Jack T. Laughlin, a Del Rio native and B-17 pilot killed over Java in January 1942 — one of the first Texans killed in WWII.

Designated Laughlin Air Force Base
Laughlin was redesignated as a permanent Air Force base in 1952 and established as a jet pilot training installation. It has trained pilots continuously since the Korean War era and remains one of the Air Force's primary undergraduate pilot training bases.

In-Processing
The first step at Laughlin AFB is contacting the Military Personnel Element (MPE) Customer Service section in Building 246 to schedule required appointments. Finance in-processing is held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 0900. Student pilots bring in-processing documents to the 47th Student Squadron Transition Office (Building 246) prior to MPF in-processing. All military personnel must bring complete personnel, medical, and financial records.
The Wing Commander's Welcome Newcomer's Orientation is held at the Laughlin AFB Library Student Activity Center (Building 223) on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month, from 0715–approximately 1430. After-hours arrivals check in at Laughlin Manor (Building 454), the 24/7 lodging and arrival point.
Laughlin AFB is home to the 47th Flying Training Wing and conducts Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) in the T-6, T-38, and T-1. Located near Del Rio, TX on the Texas-Mexico border, the small town environment means the base community is especially close-knit.

Laughlin AFB is a pilot training installation on the Rio Grande near Del Rio, Texas — one of the most remote Air Force bases in the continental US.
