Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam History

Named AfterLieutenant Colonel Horace Meek Hickam

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Honolulu, Hawaii, was formed in 2010 by merging the historic Naval Station Pearl Harbor and Hickam Air Force Base. Pearl Harbor is synonymous with the December 7, 1941, attack that brought the U.S. into World War II, and the USS Arizona Memorial remains one of the most visited sites in Hawaii. Today the joint base is the headquarters for Pacific Fleet and Pacific Air Forces, and serves as a major logistics, operations, and homeport facility for both services. It is the centerpiece of the U.S. military presence in the Pacific.

Historic Timeline

1908

Pearl Harbor Designated U.S. Naval Station

Congress authorized the development of Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu as a U.S. Naval Station in 1908, recognizing its exceptional deep-water harbor and strategic Pacific location. Construction of drydocks, piers, and naval facilities over the following decades transformed Pearl Harbor into the anchor of U.S. Pacific Fleet power.

1938

Hickam Field Established Adjacent to Pearl Harbor

Hickam Field was formally established adjacent to Pearl Harbor as the primary Army Air Corps airfield in Hawaii, named after Lt. Col. Horace Meek Hickam — a pioneering Army aviator killed in a 1934 crash. The field became the aviation component of the joint Army-Navy defense of Oahu.

1941

Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor — "A Date Which Will Live in Infamy"

Japanese carrier aircraft launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and Hickam Field on December 7, 1941, killing 2,403 Americans, wounding 1,178, sinking or damaging 21 ships, and destroying 188 aircraft. President Roosevelt's call it "a date which will live in infamy" before Congress declared war the following day, bringing the United States into World War II.

1985

U.S. Pacific Command Headquarters Consolidated

U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) consolidated its headquarters at Pearl Harbor, making the installation the command center for U.S. military operations across the Indo-Pacific — from the U.S. West Coast to the western border of India, covering more than half the Earth's surface.

2010

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Established

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam was established on October 1, 2010, merging Naval Station Pearl Harbor and Hickam Air Force Base under a single installation commander. The consolidation streamlined operations while preserving the distinct historic legacies of both installations.

Where To Live

Ewa Beach

Suburban

Ewa Beach has become the most popular destination for military families on Oahu, largely because it offers the most home for the money in an extremely expensive housing market. It's a planned community on the west side of the island with newer construction, good schools, and a family-friendly atmosphere. The commute to Pearl Harbor can be slow during rush hour, but most families consider it a fair tradeoff for more livable housing.

Mililani

Suburban

Mililani is a master-planned community in central Oahu that's long been a top pick for military families who prioritize schools and community quality. It has a reputation for excellent public schools, well-maintained parks, and a true neighborhood feel that's somewhat rare in Hawaii. The commute to JBPHH is manageable, and H-2 access opens up the island on weekends.

Commute: 20–30 min

Data & Methodology

The information on this page is compiled through a combination of sources. We reference official U.S. Department of Defense publications, branch directives, and installation command websites on a regular cadence to ensure accuracy across policy, regulation, and operational data. Where relevant, we supplement that foundation with credible auxiliary resources, including verified government agencies, military support organizations, and established partners with direct ties to the installation community.

Our editorial team includes past and present military personnel who review and contribute firsthand knowledge — ensuring what you read reflects the real experience of military life, not just what's written in a regulation.

MyBaseGuide is an independent publication and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the U.S. Department of Defense, any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, or any government agency. Information is provided for general reference and updated periodically. It may not reflect the most recent changes to installation policy or command decisions. Always confirm time-sensitive details directly with your gaining installation.
