Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia, is located adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon. Fort Myer dates to the Civil War era and has served as a ceremonial and garrison post for over 150 years. It is home to the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), the Army's official ceremonial unit and escort to the President, as well as the U.S. Army Band (Pershing's Own). Henderson Hall supports Marine Corps administrative functions. The base's primary mission is military ceremonies, dignitary support, and emergency operations in the National Capital Region.

Fort Myer Established During Civil War
Fort Myer was established in 1863 on Arlington Heights overlooking Washington, D.C., as a Union fortification during the Civil War. It was named for Brigadier General Albert J. Myer, founder of the Army Signal Corps, and became a permanent Army installation after the war.
1908
Wright Brothers Conduct Army Aircraft Trials
Orville Wright conducted the Army's first official aircraft acceptance trials at Fort Myer in September 1908, demonstrating the Wright Military Flyer to Army officials. A crash during the trials killed Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge — the first military aviation fatality.
1948
Home of the 3rd Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard)
Fort Myer became the permanent home of the 3rd Infantry Regiment — "The Old Guard" — in 1948. As the Army's official ceremonial unit, The Old Guard conducts funerals at Arlington National Cemetery and guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is visible from the post.

Designated Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall
Fort Myer and Marine Corps Henderson Hall were combined in 2009 under the BRAC process to form Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. The installation remains one of the most historically significant military posts in the country due to its proximity to the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery.
