1917

Langley Field Established

Langley Field was established adjacent to Hampton, Virginia, as one of the first permanent Army Air Service installations, named after aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley. The field became an early hub for military aviation development and scientific aeronautical research.

1920

NACA Langley Research Center Opens

The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory opened at Langley Field in 1920, becoming the nation's first dedicated aeronautics research center. NACA Langley later became NASA Langley Research Center — the birthplace of the American space program.

1946

Tactical Air Command Established at Langley

Tactical Air Command (TAC) was established at Langley Field on March 21, 1946, as the primary combat air force for land-based tactical air power in the continental United States. Langley became the permanent headquarters for TAC — the Air Force's premier tactical fighting force throughout the Cold War.

1976

First Operational F-15 Eagle Wing

The 1st Tactical Fighter Wing at Langley AFB became the world's first operational F-15 Eagle wing in 1976, fielding the Air Force's new twin-engine air superiority fighter. The 1st Fighter Wing and its F-15s remained the standard for American air superiority for the next three decades.

2010

Joint Base Langley-Eustis Established

Joint Base Langley-Eustis was established on October 1, 2010, merging Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis (U.S. Army Transportation Corps) under a single installation commander, streamlining operations and reducing administrative overhead across the two adjacent installations.
