Named AfterSamuel Pierpont Langley (civilian aviation pioneer); Brevet Brigadier General Abraham Eustis
Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton, Virginia, was created in 2010 by merging Langley Air Force Base and Fort Eustis. Langley is home to the headquarters of Air Combat Command and the 1st Fighter Wing, flying the F-22 Raptor. Fort Eustis hosts the Army's Transportation Corps School and various aviation and logistics units. The joint base combines air superiority, Army logistics, and institutional missions in one of the most military-dense regions of the country.

Langley Field Established
Langley Field was established adjacent to Hampton, Virginia, as one of the first permanent Army Air Service installations, named after aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley. The field became an early hub for military aviation development and scientific aeronautical research.
1920
NACA Langley Research Center Opens
The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory opened at Langley Field in 1920, becoming the nation's first dedicated aeronautics research center. NACA Langley later became NASA Langley Research Center — the birthplace of the American space program.

Tactical Air Command Established at Langley
Tactical Air Command (TAC) was established at Langley Field on March 21, 1946, as the primary combat air force for land-based tactical air power in the continental United States. Langley became the permanent headquarters for TAC — the Air Force's premier tactical fighting force throughout the Cold War.
1976
First Operational F-15 Eagle Wing
The 1st Tactical Fighter Wing at Langley AFB became the world's first operational F-15 Eagle wing in 1976, fielding the Air Force's new twin-engine air superiority fighter. The 1st Fighter Wing and its F-15s remained the standard for American air superiority for the next three decades.

Airman & Family Readiness Center (Langley) / Army Community Service (Fort Eustis)

In-Processing
JBLE operates two separate in-processing flows. Air Force personnel on the Langley side report to their gaining unit's Commander's Support Staff during duty hours (Mon–Fri 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM). After-hours arrivals contact Langley Inn lodging at (757) 764-4667 and report the next duty day. Army personnel on the Fort Eustis side report to the Soldier Support Center at 650 Monroe Avenue — officers to Room 100 ((757) 878-4817), enlisted to Room 130 ((757) 878-2953). Arrive in duty uniform with multiple copies of PCS orders, medical/dental records, and financial paperwork.
On the Langley side, the mandatory "Right Start" orientation includes a welcome brief from the 633rd Air Base Wing Commander, held at the Community Commons (74 Burrell Loop) from 0800 to 1200. On the Fort Eustis side, Newcomers Orientation is offered twice monthly at the Community Recreation Center (671 Lee Boulevard). All Fort Eustis personnel must complete EMAC environmental training within 30 days. You must visit the Military Housing Office before signing any off-base lease.
The Airman & Family Readiness Center at Langley ((757) 764-3990, email 633fss.fsg.mfrc@us.af.mil) and Army Community Service at Fort Eustis ((757) 878-3638) provide relocation assistance, financial counseling, employment help, EFMP support, and deployment readiness services. A Lending Locker with household items is available at both installations. Fort Eustis hosts a "Uniquely Eustis Spouse Orientation" on the last Thursday of each month. Air Force and Space Force members receive 20 free hours of childcare per child during PCS.
