Camp H. M. Smith History
Named AfterLieutenant General Holland M. "Howlin' Mad" Smith (USMC)
Camp H.M. Smith sits on the Halawa Heights ridge above Pearl Harbor in Aiea, Hawaii. Named after Lieutenant General Holland M. Smith, the "father of modern amphibious warfare," it was built during World War II as a hospital. It has since become the headquarters of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, the largest geographic combatant command in the world. The camp is a hub for strategic planning and coordination across the Indo-Pacific region and continues to be central to the U.S. military posture in Asia.

In-Processing
Camp H.M. Smith is the home of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) — the largest unified combatant command in the world by area of responsibility. The installation sits on a ridge above Pearl City on Oahu, overlooking Pearl Harbor, and tends to attract mid-to-senior grade officers and senior NCOs from all branches. Report to the Visitor Control Center (VCC) at the Main Gate on arrival and plan on two to three days of appointments to complete in-processing across the installation.
Housing is the first thing to get ahead of. Contact Ohana Navy Communities at (808) 839-8700 as soon as you have orders — on-post availability is limited and Oahu’s rental market is among the most competitive in the country. Pearl City, Aiea, and Ewa Beach are common neighborhoods for INDOPACOM personnel. Hawaii BAH is the highest in the nation but housing costs track closely; start your search immediately.
The joint environment here is real in a way that it isn’t at single-service installations. You’ll have Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, and Coast Guard colleagues at the same command, and some installation services you’re used to may be provided through a different branch’s facility. Your sponsor is especially valuable at Camp H.M. Smith for navigating which exchange, clinic, or fitness center you’ll actually use day to day.
