One of the most visible family-facing needs at Vance Air Force Base has finally moved into the funded stage. On March 13, 2026, The U.S. Department of Defense announced that Independent School District No. 57 of Garfield County, Enid Public Schools, received a $22 million grant for Eisenhower Elementary School at Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma. The department said the award represents the federal share of a $28.2 million project.

For families already living on base, and for those with freshly cut orders to Vance, this upgrade has a big impact. A long-identified school infrastructure need is no longer just a plan, it’s paid for and ready to go.

According to Military OneSource, most preschool- and elementary-age children living on base attend Eisenhower Elementary. The school sits inside the installation gate but is operated by Enid Public Schools rather than the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). Children in base housing may also be able to walk to school, depending on location.

Why This School Was Flagged for Replacement

The DoD said the project is intended to address facility conditions and capacity deficiencies at the current campus.

Eisenhower Elementary also ranked No. 65 on the 2019 Public Schools on Military Installations Priority List, a Pentagon-wide ranking used to identify schools with the most pressing construction needs.

The new school is expected to support about 350 students annually in kindergarten through fifth grade, a scale that reflects how central the campus is to daily life on base.

Why This Isn’t a DoDEA School

At Vance, the setup looks different from many overseas bases, or larger installations. Eisenhower Elementary is physically located on base, but it is part of Enid Public Schools, not the DoD’s school system. That’s why the federal funding was awarded to the local district.

Military OneSource notes that on-base families commonly attend the school despite it not being DoDEA-run. Enid Public Schools also identifies Eisenhower Elementary as its Purple Star Campus, a designation given to schools that support military-connected students through transitions and deployment-related disruptions.

Why This Matters for a Pilot Training Base

Vance Air Force Base is home to the 71st Flying Training Wing, which trains U.S. Air Force and allied pilots. The unit includes more than 2,700 personnel and conducts undergraduate pilot training for 300+ student pilots each year, honoring the mission with the base motto, “Train the world’s best pilots to defend our nation.”

That mission doesn’t operate in isolation. At training bases like Vance, family infrastructure, especially schools, is a key player in shaping how life at this duty station is experienced day to day.
