WELCOME TO RAMSTEIN AIR BASE: YOUR COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO LIVING IN KAISERSLAUTERN

Table of Contents
Welcome to Ramstein Air Base, the premier power projection platform for the U.S. Department of Defense and the centerpiece of the Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC). Situated in the scenic Rhineland-Palatinate region of southwestern Germany, Ramstein is the largest American military community outside the United States.
If you are PCSing here, you are joining a massive, dynamic, and historic mission. Ramstein serves as the headquarters for United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA) and NATO Allied Air Command. The host unit, the 86th Airlift Wing, conducts airlift, airdrop, and aeromedical evacuation operations worldwide.
The KMC consists of more than 50,000 U.S. service members, dependents, DoD civilians, and contractors spread across Ramstein, Vogelweh, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, and several nearby Army installations. Phone: +49 (0)6371-47-1110 (Base Operator / DSN: 314-480-1110)
Ramstein Air Base is located adjacent to the German town of Ramstein-Miesenbach, approximately 80 miles southwest of Frankfurt. Because this is an overseas location, your travel logistics will look slightly different than a stateside PCS.
- Flights to Ramstein Air Base
Most personnel relocating to Ramstein on commercial orders will fly into Frankfurt International Airport (FRA), which is about an hour and a half drive from the installation. From FRA, military families typically take the USO shuttle (which must be booked in advance) or a sponsor-provided vehicle directly to the base. Ramstein also operates its own Passenger Terminal (PAX Terminal) for those flying Space-Available (Space-A) or arriving via Patriot Express military charter flights directly onto the installation.
- Trains Near Ramstein Air Base
The German rail network, Deutsche Bahn (DB), is highly efficient. The closest major train station is Kaiserslautern Hauptbahnhof (Hbf), with smaller regional stops in Landstuhl and Ramstein-Miesenbach. From Frankfurt Airport, you can take a train directly to Kaiserslautern Hbf and coordinate with your sponsor for pickup.
Ramstein Air Base Transportation Office
The Traffic Management Office (TMO) should be one of your first stops when PCSing to Ramstein. Moving overseas involves shipping household goods (HHG) and unaccompanied baggage (UAB), as well as navigating strict host-nation customs. The staff here will help track your inbound shipments and assist with moving logistics.

Ramstein Air Base Entry Procedures
Access to Ramstein Air Base requires a valid Department of Defense (DoD) Common Access Card (CAC) or dependent ID. Because this is an OCONUS installation, Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) regulations apply. Dependents should travel with their No-Fee passport containing their SOFA stamp/card.
If visitors are coming from the States without a DOD ID, they must be signed onto the installation by a valid sponsor at the Visitor Control Center. Visitors must present a valid tourist passport to gain entry.

- West Gate: 24/7 (Main entry for the Visitor Control Center)
