Welcome to Naval Air Station Oceana, the Navy’s East Coast Master Jet Base. NAS Oceana was originally established in 1943 as a small training base during World War II. As Naval aviation has grown and changed, so has NAS Oceana. Today, NAS Oceana has grown to be a nearly 6,000-acre facility with a Navy community of about 20,000 servicemembers and spouses.

It’s also the largest employer in Virginia Beach.

NAS Oceana is one of multiple military installations in Hampton Roads, including: Naval Station Norfolk, Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Coast Guard Base Portsmouth, and more.

Continue reading for our in-depth guide to NAS Oceana so you can get to know your new base and its surrounding community.

Active-duty with dependents (spouses OR children) are permitted to live in base housing.

Can I live on NAS Oceana if I'm not married?

Yes, unaccompanied housing (barracks) is available on NAS Oceana and Dam Neck Annex, but eligibility depends heavily on your rank. Unmarried Sailors E1 through E3 without dependents are provided—and generally required to live in—Navy-managed barracks.

Can I bring my pet to live at NAS Oceana?

In base housing, each home may have a maximum of two pets, subject to breed restrictions.

Restricted breeds most likely include: Pit Bull Terriers (American/English Staffordshire Bull Terrier), Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Chows, and Canid/Wolf Hybrids or any mixes of those breeds.

Barnyard or exotic pets (reptiles, ducks, rabbits, chickens, ferrets, etc.) are not allowed. Contact Liberty Military housing to confirm current restrictions.

Additionally, be advised that all dogs and cats must be licensed in the Hampton Roads area. See the following for information on pet licensing in areas you might live off-base:
