Located near the Netherlands, you’ll find the NATO E-3A Component here, which is an important airborne early warning and control (AWACS) operated by multiple nations.
America and its allies use the base for surveillance and command and control operations, as the facility offers support for one of NATO’s most critical defense programs.

How Many U.S. Military Bases Are in Germany?
There are roughly 40 to 50 active U.S. military bases in Germany, depending on how you define a “base.” Some are full-fledged garrisons, while others are support sites or smaller installations tucked into rural areas.
Furthermore, there are also joint-use facilities and overlapping command structures. The exact count shifts over time in accordance with operational needs and our nation’s policies.
Compared to the Cold War era, when the U.S. maintained around 800 individual military sites across Germany, anchored by 47 major bases, it’s a much lower number.
Back then, 250,000 American troops and nearly as many civilians and family members were stationed primarily in the southern and southwestern regions, compared to around 35,000 troops stationed today.
