Welcome to Cannon Air Force Base, home of the 27th Special Operations Wing and a community of Air Commandos on the high plains of eastern New Mexico. Located just west of Clovis near the Texas state line, Cannon is part of Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) and supports specialized missions including precision strike, specialized mobility, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and air-to-ground integration. Aircraft associated with the wing include the AC-130, CV-22, MC-130, and MQ-9.

Cannon’s story actually began long before its current special operations mission. The airfield started as Portair Field, a civilian stop for early transcontinental flights in the late 1920s, before becoming Clovis Municipal Airport. During World War II, it was transformed into Clovis Army Air Base and used to train B-24, B-17, and B-29 aircrews. The installation was officially named Cannon Air Force Base in 1957 in honor of Gen. John K. Cannon, and in 2007 the 27th Fighter Wing became the 27th Special Operations Wing as Cannon transitioned to AFSOC.

A PCS to Cannon puts you in a different setting than many Air Force assignments. The base sits about eight miles west of Clovis at an elevation of roughly 4,300 feet, surrounded by wide-open eastern New Mexico plains. Clovis and nearby Portales provide most of the area's shopping, restaurants, schools, healthcare, and community services, while Cannon itself offers the everyday resources military families need to get settled.

Before you arrive, connect with your sponsor and take a look at the Cannon AFB Newcomers page. From figuring out where to live and registering the kids for school to arranging temporary lodging, accessing the installation, and finding a job after the move, there are a lot of details to work through. This guide will help you tackle the essentials and start getting familiar with life at Cannon and the surrounding Clovis-Portales community.

Where Is Cannon AFB?

Cannon Air Force Base is located in Curry County in eastern New Mexico, approximately eight miles west of Clovis and not far from the Texas Panhandle. The installation is accessible from U.S. Highway 60/84, which connects directly with the Main Gate. Travelers arriving from the Portales area can also reach the installation using New Mexico State Road 467 and the Portales Gate.

For newcomers or visitors who need help with installation access, the Cannon AFB Visitor Control Center is located near the Main Gate.

Procedures for Entering Cannon AFB

Whether Cannon AFB is your next duty station or you are simply visiting someone on the installation, knowing which gate to use and what identification to have ready can save you time when you arrive.

Cannon is a closed installation, so visitors who don’t already have an authorized base-access credential will need to complete the visitor-pass process before entering. The Cannon AFB Visitor Control Center is located beside the Main Gate and should be your first stop for most visitor-access questions.

Cannon has two primary entrances: the Main Gate, located off U.S. Highway 60/84 on the north side of the installation, and the Portales Gate, located on the south side. Both gates are open 24/7. Commercial and oversized vehicles must use the Portales Gate and its inspection area.

Average Drive Times to Base Gates From Regional Cities

From Lubbock, Texas

Lubbock is one of the closest larger cities and airport options for families traveling to Cannon. Take U.S. Highway 84 west through Littlefield and Muleshoe, cross into New Mexico at Farwell/Texico, and continue through Clovis. West of Clovis, U.S. 60/84 leads directly toward the Cannon AFB Main Gate.

Approximate drive time: 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours

From Amarillo, Texas

From Amarillo, take I-27 south toward Canyon, then head west on U.S. Highway 60. Continue through the Texas Panhandle to Texico, New Mexico, where the route connects with U.S. 84 toward Clovis. Continue west through the Clovis area on U.S. 60/84 to reach Cannon's Main Gate.

Approximate drive time: About 2 hours

From Roswell, New Mexico

If Roswell is your starting point, travel northeast on U.S. Highway 70 toward Portales. From the Portales area, use New Mexico State Road 467 to approach Cannon from the south and enter through the Portales Gate. Cannon specifically recommends this route for travelers approaching from U.S. 70.

Approximate drive time: 2 to 2.5 hours

From Albuquerque, New Mexico

Albuquerque is farther away, but it is another major airport and travel hub families may use during a PCS. Head east on I-40 toward Santa Rosa, then connect with U.S. 84 toward Fort Sumner. From Fort Sumner, U.S. 60/84 continues east through the high plains toward Cannon AFB and the Main Gate.

Approximate drive time: 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours

Need Base Access? Here's What You Need to Do

If you already have an authorized DoD Common Access Card, military dependent ID, retiree ID, or another credential accepted for installation access, you can present that credential at the gate. Visitors who do not already have authorized access generally need a sponsor and must be processed for a visitor pass.

For same-day personal visits, guests without an existing DBIDS pass or approved Entry Authorization List access should report to the Visitor Control Center with their sponsor for identity verification, background vetting, and pass issuance. Cannon's current visitor page lists the Visitor Control Center as open seven days a week from 0600–1800. For passes outside normal VCC hours, Cannon directs visitors to contact the Base Defense Operations Center at (575) 784-4111 for guidance.

If you know about a visit ahead of time, don’t wait until your guest arrives at the gate. Cannon requires advance access requests and additions to an Entry Authorization List to be submitted at least five days before the visit. Guests can also use the DBIDS Pre-Enrollment website to create a visitor profile in advance. Pre-enrollment can shorten processing time, but it does not grant base access by itself; the visitor still needs to complete the required process with the Visitor Control Center.

What ID Do You Need for Base Access?

Since May 7, 2025, visitors relying on a state-issued driver's license or identification card to enter a military installation need a REAL ID-compliant credential or another federally accepted form of identification. DoD-issued military, dependent, CAC, and similar federal credentials already satisfy installation-access identification requirements.

  • DoD ID card holders: Present your valid DoD-issued credential at the gate.
  • Visitors age 18 and older: Bring a valid REAL ID-compliant driver's license or state identification card, or another acceptable federal credential such as a U.S. passport or passport card.
  • Visitors driving onto Cannon: Be prepared to provide a valid driver's license, current vehicle registration, and proof of insurance when processing your pass.
  • Sponsored visitors: Visitors without independent base-access credentials should expect to complete identity verification and a background check before a pass is issued.
  • Foreign-national visitors: Unofficial foreign-national visitors are not permitted unescorted access. They must report to the Visitor Control Center with appropriate identification or passport documents, complete the required vetting, and remain escorted by an approved ID-card holder while on the installation. Cannon may issue an escort-required DBIDS paper pass for up to 30 days after successful processing.

If you are unsure whether your identification will be accepted, check the Department of Homeland Security REAL ID information or call the Cannon AFB Visitor Control Center at (575) 784-2400 before you make the trip. Base-access policies can change with security conditions, so confirming current procedures is always a good idea before bringing visitors onto Cannon.

Cannon AFB Gates & Hours of Operation

Getting around Cannon AFB is fairly straightforward once you know which entrance fits your route. The installation has two primary gates, the Main Gate off U.S. Highway 60/84 and the Portales Gate off State Road 467, and both are currently open 24/7. Visitors who need a base pass should plan to stop at the Cannon AFB Visitor Control Center near the Main Gate during its operating hours.

Main Gate

The Main Gate is Cannon’s primary entrance and is located on the north side of the installation off U.S. Highway 60/84, making it the most convenient gate for anyone approaching from Clovis, Texico, Lubbock, or Amarillo.

The Cannon AFB Visitor Control Center is located immediately beside this entrance at 601 Chindit Avenue, Building 2220. Visitors who don’t already have authorized installation access should report here for identity verification, required background screening, and visitor-pass processing.

Gate Hours: Open 24/7Main Gate Phone: (575) 784-6380

Portales Gate

The Portales Gate is located on the south side of Cannon AFB and provides convenient access for anyone approaching from Portales, Roswell, or U.S. Highway 70. Travelers coming from the south can take State Road 467 directly toward the installation.

The Portales Gate is also the required entrance for commercial and oversized vehicles, which must use the inspection area at this gate rather than entering through the Main Gate.

Gate Hours: Open 24/7Phone: (575) 784-4675

New Arrivals & In-Processing

Your first stop after arriving at Cannon depends on when you get there. During normal duty hours, newly assigned service members should connect with their sponsor and report directly to their gaining unit’s Commander Support Staff (CSS). Your CSS will then coordinate your installation in-processing and provide information about the documents and appointments you will need to complete. Cannon guidance states that members should be scheduled for in-processing within 24 hours of arrival.

If you arrive after duty hours, on a weekend, or on a holiday, report to the Caprock Inn before checking in with your unit on the next duty day. Caprock Inn serves as Cannon’s after-hours arrival point and on-base temporary lodging facility.

New Air Commandos should also expect newcomer briefings as part of the transition to Cannon. One Cannon-specific program is Medical Right Start, a newcomer orientation designed to explain healthcare at the 27th Special Operations Medical Group, including TRICARE, patient advocacy, pharmacy services, mental health resources, EFMP, health promotion, and other medical support. Cannon currently maintains Medical Right Start resources online for newly arriving personnel and families.

As with any PCS, keep the important paperwork with you instead of packing it in your household goods. Hand-carry your orders, military and dependent IDs, travel documents and receipts, medical and dental records, school records, vehicle documents, housing paperwork, and any documents your gaining unit has asked you to bring. Your sponsor and CSS should be your primary points of contact if you are unsure where to report or what you will need during your first few days at Cannon.

Cannon AFB Amenities & Facilities

Once you make it through the gate and start settling into Cannon AFB, there are a handful of places you will probably visit sooner rather than later. From healthcare and housing questions to replacing an ID card, sorting out PCS pay, and finally restocking the refrigerator, here are some of the Cannon facilities worth saving in your phone.

Cannon AFB Housing

Finding a place to call home is one of the biggest decisions that comes with a PCS, and Cannon gives newcomers several routes to consider. Depending on your rank, dependency status, and personal preferences, you may be looking at privatized family housing, an unaccompanied dorm, or a home in the Clovis-Portales community. Starting the housing conversation before you arrive can make those first few weeks in eastern New Mexico much easier.

Military Housing Office

Before committing to a lease or purchasing a home in the local community, connect with the Cannon AFB Military Housing Office. The MHO can walk you through on-base and off-base options, explain current housing availability, provide relocation and referral assistance, and help you understand your responsibilities before entering into a rental or sales agreement.

Cannon also encourages incoming members to use HEAT through HOMES.mil to start the housing process before arriving.

Unaccompanied Housing

For many single Airmen arriving at Cannon, Unaccompanied Housing will be their first home at the new duty station. UH is generally provided to unaccompanied E-1 through E-3 Airmen and E-4 Airmen with fewer than three years of service. Each Airman receives a private sleeping room along with furnishings, bed linens, and basic supplies, although room layouts can vary.

Cannon's permanent-party UH campus includes several dormitories, and Airmen who are E-4 with more than three years of service or higher are generally expected to live in the local community unless otherwise authorized.

Cannon has also used off-base apartment housing to increase available accommodations for single Airmen, so newly arriving members should work directly with Dorm Management for their assignment and current options.

Where Should I Live?

Deciding whether to live on base or in the surrounding community is one of those PCS choices that can shape everything from your morning commute to where you grocery shop and where your kids attend school. If off-base living is on your radar, start with the Cannon AFB Military Housing Office.

The MHO works with local landlords, real estate professionals, and property managers and can help with rental listings, lease reviews, military release clauses, landlord concerns, and other questions before you commit to a property.

Before signing a lease or buying, compare your BAH with rent or mortgage costs, utilities, insurance, commute time, pet restrictions, and school zoning. The Housing Office also recommends checking HOMES.mil for available rentals and contacting the MHO before entering into a written lease or sales agreement.

What Housing Options Are Available On Base?

Family housing at Cannon is privatized through Cannon Family Homes, managed by Balfour Beatty Communities. The community offers two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes across five neighborhoods: Air Commando Village, Chavez North, Chavez South, Chavez West, and Joe Cannon North. Eligibility varies by rank, bedroom requirements, and family composition.

Residents have access to amenities including playgrounds, a swimming pool, splash park, basketball and tennis courts, baseball and soccer fields, sand volleyball, walking areas, a community center, and resident events. Many homes also include fenced backyards, garages, patios, fully equipped kitchens, washer/dryer connections, and utilities included in the rent.

Air Commando Village

Air Commando Village offers three- and four-bedroom homes with two-and-a-half bathrooms for eligible E-7 through E-8 and O-1 through O-5 families. Homes feature amenities such as primary suites, garages, and exterior storage, giving families a little more room to spread out after the PCS boxes finally disappear.

The neighborhood is conveniently located near several playgrounds and basketball courts, along with the base gym, theater, and dining options. Air Commando Village is also home to the neighborhood center and splash park, making it especially convenient for families who want recreation close to home.

Chavez North

Chavez North includes three- and four-bedroom homes with two-and-a-half bathrooms for eligible E-1 through E-6 families. Homes include fully equipped kitchens, primary suites, fenced backyards, patios, and garages.

Located along the northern portion of the housing community, Chavez North gives residents convenient access to playgrounds, parks, and a dog park. The community center, swimming pool, basketball court, and sand volleyball court are also nearby, making this a practical option for families who like having outdoor amenities within easy reach.

Chavez South

Chavez South offers three- and four-bedroom homes with two to two-and-a-half bathrooms for eligible E-1 through E-6 families. Depending on the floor plan, homes may include garages, fenced backyards, and outdoor living space.

One of the biggest conveniences of Chavez South is its location. The neighborhood sits near the community center and Cannon Child Development Center, which may be especially helpful for families with younger children trying to simplify the workday routine.

Chavez West

For families looking for a wider range of bedroom sizes, Chavez West offers two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes with one to two bathrooms. The neighborhood is available to eligible E-1 through E-6 families and includes features such as fenced backyards, fully equipped kitchens, garages, and patios.

Chavez West is close to the community center, pool, fitness room, playgrounds, tennis courts, and other sports facilities. The availability of two-bedroom floor plans also makes it worth exploring for smaller households that may not need one of Cannon's larger family homes.

Joe Cannon North

Joe Cannon North offers three- and four-bedroom homes with two to two-and-a-half bathrooms for eligible O-4 through O-5 families. Homes feature amenities such as primary suites, garages, patios, fully equipped kitchens, and generous storage space.

This neighborhood is especially convenient for anyone who likes having everyday base amenities nearby. Cannon Family Homes notes that Joe Cannon North is just minutes from the BX, Commissary, bowling center, library, playgrounds, and sports courts and fields, making errands and recreation a little easier without leaving the installation.

Off-Base Housing & Military Preferred Living Areas

Finding an off-base home near Cannon AFB is about more than finding a house you like. Commute time, school boundaries, pets, yard space, utilities, access to shopping and healthcare, and staying within your BAH can all affect which part of eastern New Mexico makes the most sense for you.

Before signing a lease or purchasing a home, connect with the Cannon AFB Military Housing Office. The MHO works with landlords, real estate professionals, and property managers in the surrounding community and can provide current rental information, help explain lease terms and military clauses, and assist with landlord or resident concerns. You can also browse available rentals through HOMES.mil.

Most off-base housing searches around Cannon center on Clovis and Portales, but smaller communities such as Melrose and Texico may also be worth considering depending on your priorities. Market prices and available inventory can change quickly, so use Realtor.com as a starting point and compare current listings before making a decision.

Clovis

If keeping the commute short and everyday conveniences close by are priorities, Clovis will probably be one of the first places you look. Cannon sits about eight miles west of the city, and Clovis has the area's largest concentration of rental homes, homes for sale, restaurants, shopping, medical services, parks, and other amenities. Housing inventory is also much larger here than in the smaller surrounding communities. Families should always verify the school assigned to a specific address before committing to a home.

Travel to Cannon AFB: Approximately 10–20 minutes

Median Listing Home Price: Approximately $229,950

Median Rent: Approximately $1,300 per month

Schools: Clovis Municipal Schools; current individual GreatSchools ratings vary by campus.

Portales

Portales offers a different feel from Clovis. Home to Eastern New Mexico University, the community has more of a small college-town atmosphere and is surrounded by the agricultural landscape of Roosevelt County. Portales still has restaurants, parks, recreation, local businesses, and everyday services, but generally feels smaller and quieter than Clovis. The commute is longer, but Cannon's Portales Gate makes this a realistic option for many personnel.

Travel to Cannon AFB: Approximately 20–30 minutes

Median Listing Home Price: Approximately $199,000

Median Rent: Approximately $675 per month

Schools: Portales Municipal Schools; ratings and school assignments should be verified before choosing a property.

Melrose

If wide-open spaces and a very small-town setting sound appealing, Melrose may be worth researching. Located west of Cannon along U.S. Highway 60/84, Melrose offers a rural alternative to living in Clovis while still keeping the installation within a reasonable commuting distance. The community is considerably smaller, though, which means shopping, healthcare, restaurants, and many everyday errands will generally require a drive into Clovis.

Housing availability is the biggest limitation. Realtor.com has recently shown only a handful of homes for sale in Melrose and does not consistently publish a reliable citywide median listing price because inventory is so limited. That makes this a community where current listings matter much more than broad market averages.

Travel to Cannon AFB: Approximately 20–30 minutes

Median Listing Home Price: No reliable current citywide median due to limited inventory

Schools: Melrose Public Schools

Texico

Right on the New Mexico-Texas state line, Texico offers another small-community option for anyone willing to trade a longer drive for a quieter setting. The town developed from the region's railroad and agricultural history and remains closely connected with neighboring Farwell, Texas. It is east of Clovis, so anyone stationed at Cannon should factor the additional drive across the Clovis area into the daily commute.

Like Melrose, Texico has a very small housing market. If Texico interests you, it is worth monitoring listings early because there may simply be fewer homes to choose from at any given time.

Travel to Cannon AFB: Approximately 30–40 minutes

Median Listing Home Price: No reliable current citywide median due to limited inventory

Schools: Texico Municipal Schools

Temporary Housing Options

If you can get ahead of the housing search before your move, the Housing Early Assistance Tool (HEAT) is a good place to start. HEAT allows incoming service members to connect with the Cannon AFB Military Housing Office before arrival, ask questions, and begin sorting through on-base and off-base housing options. Cannon also recommends using HOMES.mil to research rental properties that have been reviewed through the military housing referral program.

Of course, PCS timelines don’t always cooperate. If permanent housing is not ready when you arrive, check Cannon's on-base lodging first, then compare hotels in Clovis based on your authorized lodging rate, pet needs, kitchen access, laundry, breakfast, and how long you expect to stay. If you are traveling on official orders, make sure you understand any non-availability documentation or reimbursement requirements before booking commercial lodging.

Caprock Inn

The Caprock Inn is Cannon AFB's on-base lodging facility and one of the most convenient temporary housing options for newly arriving Airmen and families. Rooms include free Wi-Fi, cable television, microwaves, refrigerators, and coffee makers, while guests also have access to housekeeping and laundry facilities. Pet-friendly rooms are available for an additional charge, which can be especially useful when the whole family, paws included, is making the PCS.

The Commissary, Exchange, and Shoppette are within walking distance, so you can take care of everyday errands without leaving Cannon while you wait for permanent housing. When you are ready to explore your new community, Clovis is only a short drive away and offers everything from parks and museums to restaurants and a surprisingly important piece of rock-and-roll history.

The hotel also offers complimentary breakfast, free guest laundry, an outdoor pool, fitness center, and free parking.

Pets are welcome, with Marriott currently allowing up to two pets per room for a nonrefundable fee. When you need a break from housing appointments, explore Clovis' musical history. The city is famous for the "Clovis Sound," and the historic Norman Petty Recording Studio hosted artists including Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. Visit Clovis has information on the studio and other local music attractions.

Guests receive free hot breakfast, Wi-Fi, and parking, along with access to an indoor pool, fitness center, business center, and pet-friendly rooms. Hilton also classifies the Clovis property as an extended-stay hotel with in-room kitchen options.

The hotel is on the north side of Clovis, near shopping, restaurants, and Colonial Park Golf Course. If the kids need to burn off some PCS energy, head over to Hillcrest Park Zoo. The zoo sits within a much larger park that also includes playgrounds, a splash park, picnic areas, sports facilities, and a dog park.

Hampton Inn Clovis

Hampton Inn Clovis is a good option for families who may not need a full extended-stay kitchen but still want convenient hotel amenities. The property offers free hot breakfast and Wi-Fi, an indoor pool, fitness center, business center, connecting rooms, and pet-friendly accommodations. Cribs are also available, which can be one less thing to worry about when traveling with younger children.

The hotel is located about half a mile from Colonial Park Golf Course and puts you close to the restaurants and businesses along North Prince Street. For more ideas when you need an afternoon away from the PCS checklist, the Visit Clovis family guide includes local swimming, skating, mini golf, museums, escape rooms, and other activities.

Best Western Cannon A.F.B.

As the name suggests, Best Western Cannon A.F.B. is another hotel geared toward travelers visiting the installation. The property offers a complimentary hot breakfast, Wi-Fi, an indoor pool and hot tub, fitness center, 24-hour business center, and guest laundry, all useful amenities when you are living out of suitcases for longer than expected. The hotel also welcomes pets, although current fees and restrictions should be confirmed when booking.

Its Clovis location also makes it easy to start learning a little about your new duty-station community. Head downtown to see the Phil and Vernah Williams Historic Railroad Park, where you can explore Clovis' railroad history and see the restored 9005 locomotive.

Schools

School planning at Cannon AFB looks a little different than it does at installations with a school just inside the gate. There is no K–12 school located on Cannon AFB, so military families use schools in the surrounding eastern New Mexico communities. The two largest public-school systems serving Cannon families are Clovis Municipal Schools and Portales Municipal Schools, with smaller districts such as Texico and Melrose also worth researching depending on where you decide to live.

The Cannon AFB School Liaison should be one of your first resources if you are moving with school-age children. The School Liaison can help families compare public, private, and homeschool options; understand school boundaries; transfer records and credits; navigate special education services; and learn how the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children may help during a PCS transition.

Base Schools (K–12)

Cannon AFB School Options

Cannon AFB does not operate a DoDEA or other K–12 school on the installation. Instead, school assignment depends largely on where your family lives, making education an important part of the housing conversation before you sign a lease or choose a neighborhood.

Families using Cannon's School Age Care program should also consider transportation when choosing a school. The program currently offers transportation to Zia and Mesa Elementary Schools based on availability, while students enrolled at Barry Elementary can use a public-school bus to and from the program. Parents are currently responsible for transportation for children attending other Clovis or Portales schools.

Off-Base Schools (K–12)

Where you choose to live around Cannon can make a significant difference in your school options. Clovis and Portales are the two largest nearby communities, while families looking farther out may also research Texico or Melrose.

Before signing a lease or buying a home, confirm the exact school associated with the address and ask about transfers, transportation, special programs, and extracurricular opportunities.

Clovis Municipal Schools

Clovis Municipal Schools serves Pre-K through 12th grade and enrolls the largest number of military-connected students in the Cannon AFB area. The district offers traditional neighborhood schools along with specialized opportunities such as bilingual programming from kindergarten through 12th grade, Career and Technical Education pathways, Barry STEAM Academy, a sixth-grade academy, athletics, fine arts, and alternative learning options. The district also maintains dedicated resources for military families.

Students are generally assigned according to the legal guardian's residential address, so families should use the district's school-zone information before committing to a home. Elementary and middle school students may be considered for zone exceptions when the requested campus has sufficient space.

For registration, Clovis currently asks new families for proof of residence, up-to-date immunization records, a Social Security card, and a birth certificate. A signed base-housing offer is one of the documents the district accepts as proof of residence. Clovis also transitioned to Synergy and ParentVUE, so incoming families should use the current enrollment information rather than older Skyward instructions they may find online.

Portales Municipal Schools

Families who choose to live in Portales should explore Portales Municipal Schools. The district currently includes Brown Early Childhood Center, James Elementary School, Lindsey-Steiner Elementary School, Valencia Elementary School, Portales Junior High School, and Portales High School.

Portales offers academics alongside athletics, special student services, transportation, food services, and parent resources. Because Portales is home to Eastern New Mexico University, the community can also appeal to families interested in a smaller college-town atmosphere while remaining within commuting distance of Cannon.

For new enrollment, the district currently requires an original birth certificate, current immunization record, and primary contact phone number. Families can access enrollment forms, the district calendar, PowerSchool, ParentSquare, meal information, athletics, and other resources through the district website.

Texico Municipal Schools

If you are considering living closer to the New Mexico-Texas state line, Texico Municipal Schools offers a small-district alternative to Clovis. The district provides a full Pre-K–12 pathway through Texico Elementary School for Pre-K through fifth grade, Texico Middle School for grades six through eight, and Texico High School for grades nine through 12.

The district website provides family access tools, calendars, special education resources, food services, school health information, athletics, gifted and talented resources, and college and career readiness information. Because Texico is roughly a 30- to 40-minute drive from Cannon depending on your location and traffic, families should weigh school preferences against the longer daily commute.

Melrose Municipal Schools

For families considering the quieter community west of Cannon, Melrose Municipal Schools is another district to research. The small school system includes Melrose Elementary School and Melrose Junior High and High School, both located on the district's Missouri Avenue campus.

The district offers athletics, family resources, special education information, school transportation, Skyward Family Access, and student programs. Its smaller size may appeal to some families, but it is worth talking directly with the district and the Cannon School Liaison about available coursework, extracurriculars, special services, and transportation before making a housing decision.

Private Schools

Families interested in private education can also work with the Cannon School Liaison to compare local options.

Clovis Christian Schools

Clovis Christian Schools is a private Christian school in Clovis serving students from Pre-K through 12th grade. The school combines academics with faith-based instruction and offers programs across elementary, middle, and high school levels. It is accredited through both ACSI and Cognia.

Families considering private education can use the school website to research admissions, academics, athletics, student life, tuition, and financial assistance. Clovis Christian also offers tuition-scholarship opportunities, although families should contact the school directly for current eligibility, application deadlines, and available funding.

Employment Assistance & Resources

A PCS can create just as many career questions as housing questions, especially for military spouses who may be rebuilding professional networks, transferring licenses, searching for remote work, or starting over in a smaller job market. Cannon AFB is considered a geographically remote installation, so it is especially helpful to use both on-base career support and broader military-spouse employment resources when beginning your search.

From resume preparation and interview practice to federal employment and local job listings, there are several places to turn for help.

Military & Family Readiness Center

The Cannon AFB Military & Family Readiness Center is one of the best places to start if you are searching for work after a PCS. Its Employment Assistance Program supports military spouses, transitioning service members, and other eligible members of the Cannon community with career planning, job-search assistance, resume development, networking, and employment resources.

The M&FRC also hosts employment-focused events throughout the year. Cannon's programming has included USAJOBS workshops, civilian and federal resume assistance, mock interviews, professional headshots, and career fairs that connect job seekers directly with employers. Check the Cannon Force event calendar after you arrive because workshops and hiring events change throughout the year.

Cannon AFB NAF Jobs

If working on base sounds appealing, Cannon AFB NAF Human Resources is worth adding to your job-search list. Nonappropriated Fund, or NAF, employees support many of the programs military families use every day, including recreation, bowling, golf, childcare, youth programs, food service, lodging, and other Force Support activities.

Cannon currently posts available NAF positions through USAJOBS. NAF employment is federal employment, although it operates under a different personnel and funding system than traditional civil service positions. Opportunities may include flexible, part-time, and regular positions, which can make NAF employment particularly useful for spouses looking for work that fits around military-family schedules.

Cannon AFB Civilian Employment

For traditional federal civil service positions at Cannon, the Civilian Personnel Office provides information about hiring eligibility, civilian personnel programs, and employment procedures. All Cannon civil service vacancy announcements are posted through USAJOBS.

The installation employs civilians across a wide range of fields, and current federal vacancies can include technical, administrative, engineering, logistics, healthcare, and support positions.

Military spouses should pay close attention to the Military Spouse Preference and military-spouse hiring eligibility sections of individual announcements because some Cannon vacancies include those hiring paths.

USAJOBS

When federal employment is part of your PCS plan, USAJOBS is one site you will want to check regularly. You can search positions by location, agency, occupation, grade, work schedule, telework eligibility, and hiring path, making it easy to narrow results to Cannon AFB, Clovis, or eastern New Mexico.

Create a profile early, upload your federal resume and supporting documents, and set up saved searches so you do not have to manually check for new Cannon openings every day.

Federal vacancies can have short application windows, and some announcements may be limited to specific groups such as military spouses, veterans, current federal employees, or other special hiring authorities. Cannon's Civilian Personnel Office can also help explain hiring eligibility if you are unfamiliar with the federal application process.

SpouseWorks

SpouseWorks, formerly known as SECO, is especially useful at a location like Cannon because your job search does not have to stop at the Clovis city limits. The free Military OneSource program helps eligible military spouses grow skills, get career advice, and find employment, including opportunities that may be remote or portable to the next duty station.

Spouses can connect with career coaches for resume reviews, interview practice, career exploration, salary-negotiation guidance, education planning, and networking support. SpouseWorks also provides access to job-search resources, the Military Spouse Employer Partnership, paid fellowship opportunities, and remote-job resources. The Military Spouse Employer Partnership now includes more than 1,000 participating companies and organizations committed to recruiting and retaining military spouses.

Whether you are returning to work, changing industries, pursuing additional education, or trying to build a career that can survive the next PCS, this is one resource worth bookmarking before you even arrive at Cannon.

New Mexico Workforce Connection – Clovis

For a closer look at the civilian job market outside the gate, New Mexico Workforce Connection provides no-cost employment resources throughout the state. The Clovis America's Job Center serves Curry and Roosevelt counties, along with several other eastern New Mexico communities, making it relevant whether you decide to live in Clovis or Portales.

The center offers job-search assistance, employment listings, veteran services, WIOA adult and youth programs, training resources, and connections with local employers. Job seekers can also use computers and other career-center resources, while the online system allows users to search openings, post resumes, and create automated job searches.

Beyond the Gate: Enjoying Cannon AFB

Cannon AFB may sit on the wide-open plains of eastern New Mexico, but that does not mean your weekends have to be empty. Clovis has its own mix of music history, local restaurants, rodeos, family attractions, parks, and community events, while nearby Portales adds a college-town atmosphere and easy access to outdoor recreation.

So give yourself some time to settle in, learn the local favorites, and explore beyond the gate. Cannon may be a more remote assignment than some Air Force bases, but that can also be part of the adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I live on Cannon AFB without children?

Yes, depending on your eligibility. Children are not specifically required to qualify for privatized family housing, but Cannon Family Homes primarily serves eligible active-duty families assigned to Cannon. Your dependency status, rank, bedroom entitlement, and housing availability can all affect what you qualify for.

Before making plans, contact the Cannon AFB Military Housing Office or start the process through HEAT so the housing team can review your specific situation.

Can I live on Cannon AFB if I'm not married?

It depends on your rank and dependency status. Unaccompanied Airmen in grades E-1 through E-3 and E-4 with fewer than three years of service are generally required to live in Unaccompanied Housing. Airmen who are E-4 with more than three years of service and above are normally expected to find housing in the local community unless another arrangement is authorized.

Privatized family housing generally serves eligible active-duty families, so unmarried Airmen without eligible dependents should not assume they qualify for Cannon Family Homes. Contact Cannon AFB Housing or Dorm Management for guidance before making housing plans.

What are the PT hours for Cannon AFB?

There is no single installation-wide PT schedule that applies to everyone at Cannon. Your workout schedule will depend on your squadron, mission requirements, leadership, and individual fitness responsibilities.

Can I use coupons at the commissary?

Yes. The Cannon AFB Commissary accepts qualifying paper manufacturer coupons, and shoppers can also use digital coupons through the Commissary Rewards Card. Digital coupons are loaded to your Rewards Card and automatically applied when the card is scanned at checkout.

You cannot stack a paper coupon and a digital coupon on the same item, although both types of coupons can be used during the same shopping trip on different eligible items. The Cannon Commissary also offers CLICK2GO for curbside grocery pickup.

Is Cannon AFB hands-free?

Yes. Air Force traffic rules prohibit drivers from using a handheld cell phone while operating a vehicle on an installation. If you need to make or receive a call while driving, use an approved hands-free or voice-activated system, or safely park the vehicle before using your phone. Texting while driving is prohibited.

These rules apply throughout Cannon AFB, so get your navigation and playlist sorted out before you start driving through the installation.

Can my pet live on Cannon AFB?

Yes, pets are allowed in Cannon Family Homes, including large dogs, but there are restrictions. Cannon Family Homes currently allows a maximum of two pets per household and maintains certain breed restrictions, so families should contact the leasing office before bringing a pet to confirm the current policy.

Unaccompanied Housing follows separate dormitory rules. If you will be living in a dorm, contact the UH Management Office before bringing any animal so you understand what is and is not permitted.
