WHAT ARE THE MILITARY BASES IN CALIFORNIA?

By Allison Kirschbaum

When you hear of California, you might think of its famous beaches and tech hubs, but it’s also home to some of the most important military bases in the United States. All of the military bases in California have their own role in supporting our nation’s defense.

Major Army Bases in California

The most well-known U.S. Army base in California is Fort Irwin, which is located in the Mojave Desert and is the largest base for the Army branch.

Soldiers train here for real-life setting combat scenarios, especially desert warfare. The dry, sandy environment helps prepare them for missions in desert areas. The Soldiers practice in places that look like real war zones, so if they get sent out, they will be ready.

Another important Army base is the Presidio of Monterey, where they specialize and are more focused on education than combat.

This base is home to the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLI), where military personnel from all branches learn new languages so they can support missions wherever.

These two bases serve very different purposes; one trains troops for physical readiness, and the other prepares them with critical language and cultural skills.

Air Force Bases in California

Military bases in California, such as the Army branch, have two of the biggest Air Force bases, Edwards Air Force Base and Travis Air Force Base.

The Edwards Air Force Base is located in Southern California near the Mojave Desert and it is mostly known for aircraft testing. In line with that, they are also known for a long history of experimental flight programs, because many planes like the F-22 Raptor were tested on this base.

If you didn’t know, NASA also works here, and they make it a hub for innovation in both military and civilian aviation.

On the other hand, there’s Travis Air Force Base near Fairfield, which is often called the "Gateway to the Pacific" because it has amazing airlift capabilities.

The Travis Air Force Base helps move troops and supplies to every country, and they do this mostly in countries located in the Pacific and the Middle East.

Biggest Navy Base in California

There are also U.S. Navy bases in California. The biggest military base in California is the Naval Base San Diego. This base supports ships and submarines, and it’s mostly used as a home port for the ships of the Navy.

There are thousands of Sailors stationed there, and an entire community is built around it, so it’s a pretty busy location.

Another is the Naval Base Ventura County, which includes multiple installations like Point Mugu and Port Hueneme, and these both support naval aviation and the Navy’s construction forces, which are known as the Seabees.

The Busiest Marine and Coast Guard Bases in California

Let’s not forget about the Marine bases in California. One of the Marine bases is the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, which is located in Southern California.

Yes, it is true that this is also one of the busiest Marine bases in the world because it is used for training exercises. The Marines who are staying here are mostly preparing for deployments overseas.

The largest Marine Corps military base is also in California, which is the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms. What they do here is mostly live-fire exercises and desert warfare training, which are essential missions in the Middle East.

Now that we have the busiest and largest base for the Navy, we also have the smallest base for the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard Island near the Alameda base helps with search and rescue missions, and they help keep an eye on boats and ships traveling in and out of California.

There are a lot of military bases in California, and each of them serves a different but also the same purpose in the United States’ national defense. Each branch of the military has a different mission because some train people to fight, others help them learn new languages, build things, or fly planes, but all of them help protect the nation.

Yes, we often think California is a sunny, fun place, but little did we know, it's also an important part of keeping our country safe because military bases in California help train new service members and start important air and sea missions.
