Before You Enlist: What to Know

Joining the military is one of the most significant decisions you'll ever make. It affects your career, your family, and your future for years to come. The good news is that the process is well-defined, and preparation makes a massive difference in your outcome.

The ASVAB Matters More Than You Think

Most people think the ASVAB just determines whether you can enlist. In reality, it determines what jobs you can choose. A high score opens doors to intelligence, cybersecurity, medical, and technical careers that translate directly to six-figure civilian jobs. A minimum score gets you in — but limits your options significantly.

Physical Preparation Saves You Pain

Basic training is designed to push you. Showing up unprepared makes the experience significantly harder and increases injury risk. Each branch publishes PT test minimums — use our Boot Camp Fitness Prep tool to see where you stand and give yourself at least 4-8 weeks of progressive training before shipping.

Don't Skip the Research Phase

Talk to current service members. Visit recruiters from multiple branches. Research jobs before MEPS so you know what to ask for. The decision you make at the job selection table is one of the most consequential of your military career — don't go in blind.

Information on this page is compiled from official DoD and branch recruiting websites. Requirements, policies, and standards change — always verify current information with a recruiter. Data current as of April 2026.
