Military History · Easy
At the Battle of Midway in June 1942, U.S. Navy dive bombers dealt Japan a blow its carrier fleet never recovered from. How many Japanese fleet carriers were sunk in the battle?
The answer is C: Four
Dive bombers from USS Enterprise and USS Yorktown fatally damaged Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu within minutes on the morning of June 4, and Hiryu was hit later that day and sank the next morning. Japan lost four fleet carriers, a heavy cruiser, hundreds of aircraft, and irreplaceable veteran aviators, while the U.S. lost Yorktown. Midway is widely considered the turning point of the Pacific War.
